Dish Network and DirecTV have recently started carrying a national version of NESN channel. New England Sports Network (NESN)
that is a regional sports network,will broadcast programs as NESN National channel. The NESN delivers coverage of regional sports in only
six New England states. But now it is expanding its service as NESN National, outside its regional territories. It is available in many regions of the United States and delivered primarily by Dish Network, DirecTV and Time Warner.
NESN is jointly owned by Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins. The expansion of the service as NESN National is inclined mainly to deliver subscribers, an extensive coverage of the games covered by the channel.The programming of the NESN National includes sports coverage along with other programs. This network broadcasts programs featuring New England people and their lifestyle unlike NESN’s former ll-sports programs. The network delivers full coverage of all the leagues of Red Sox and Boston Bruins. Subscribers can watch different types of broadcasts such pre-games, in-games, post games and others. The pre-games includes highlights of previous games, analysis on upcoming teams, player profiles and many more. In-game telecasts deliver the live game along with play-by-play announcer, expert commentator and field reporter. Post-game telecasts include a wrap-up of all games presented by studio analysts and game experts. Subscribers can enjoy watching different sports as well as other programs via the channel. But people residing outside the league-controlled territories will be provided alternate programs during Red Sox and Boston Bruins game. These subscribers will be delivered the pre and post games. However, subscribers of Dish Network and DirecTV can watch the live coverage of those games by subscribing specific packages.
In Dish Network, the NESN National channel is included in NHL Center Ice and also a number of other packages. Subscribers within the
league-control territories are provided as local channel by Dish Network. On the other hand in DirecTV, the NESN National channel is delivered in Sports packages viz. NHL Center Ice and MLB Extra Innings. Also, this channel is included in main packages such as Premier package. DirecTV delivers this channel as local channel to subscribers within designated market areas.
The NESN National is formed mainly with the prospect of delivering games of the Red Sox and Boston Bruins to subscribers who reside outside the league-controlled regions. However, according to some subscribers, the NESN and NESN National comprise almost the same content. Hence, sometime the NESN National channel is termed as an expansion for the growth of the brand name of the service. A similar expansion was made by the YES, the RSN in which the New York Yankees have a stake. But it is to be noted here that with this channel, subscribers outside New England can easily access the games delivered by the Red Sox and Boston Bruins.
